Non-stop monsoon rains trigger landslides, claims 35 lives


Times24.net: Around 35 people were killed as landslides hit Rangamati, Chittagong, and Bandarban areas due to uninterrupted heavy rainfall on Monday night. Around 13 bodies were recovered at Rangamati, six at Bandarban and eight people were found dead at Chittagong after the mudslides. Moreover, a man was killed as tree fell on him at Kaptai upazila of Rangamati and a young man went on missing in the River Karnaphuli.

Our Rangamati correspondent says, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Rangamati killed at least 13 people on Monday night. Among the deceased, ten people were killed in Rangamati town, and two in Kaptai upazila.

Around five bodies were recovered from different places of Rangamati city on Tuesday night and brought to Rangamati Sadar Hospital.

The hospital’s emergency unit authorities confirmed death of eight people.

The deceased are Ruma Akhter, Nuria Akhter, Hazera Begum, Sonali Chakma, Amit Chakma, Ayus Mallik, Liton Mallik, and Chumki Das, all are residents of Juba Unnayan and Bhedbhedi areas.

Raikhal union Chairman Chhaya Mang Marma said two people— Anuching Marma, and Niki Marma, were dead in landslide in the Karigarpara area under the union of Kaptai upazila.

Another man, named Abul Hossain, was died as tree fell on him in the upazila. One Iqbal went on missing in River Karnaphula at the upazila.

Power outage occurs in several areas of Rangamati.

Fire fighters and members of Civil Defence and other law enforcers are conducting rescue operation in several areas of the city, with the death toll expected to rise.

On the other hand, NTV’s Chittagong correspondent reports, eight people including two children were killed and two others injured in devastating mudslides at Chandanaish and Rangunia upazilas of Chittagong on Monday night.

Chittagong district executive magistrate Masud in a message on Tuesday morning confirmed the casualty occurred following the landslides.

The message said four people were killed as landslide hit at Bogabil in Rajnagar upazila of Rangunia.

However, a man was killed in a lightning strike at Chaktai, said Chittagong Medical College Hospital’s (CMCH) police post sub-inspector (SI) Hamid.

Former chairman of Dhopchhari union council Abu Yusuf Chowdhury told NTV Online landslide occurred on Asgar Ali’s house underneath the hill and left Azgar’s daughter Mahia on the spot.

In another incident, three members of a family including two children were killed as landslide hit their house at Chhanbunia area. The deceased are two children, Keucha Keyang, 10, Memang Keyang, 13, and 50-year-old Mokaing Keyang.

Two others, named Sanu Keyan, in his twenties, and Belau Keyan, around 28 years, were injured during them mudslide and taken to Bandarban Hospital, said the former UC chairman.

In Bandarban, at least six people including children were killed in incident of landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Sadar upazila early on Tuesday.

The deceased are Mitu Barua, around six years, Shuvo Barua, 8 years old, and Lata Barua, around four years, children of Shuman Barua, residents of Lemujhiripara, Agapara’s Kamrun Nahar, in her twenties, and her 8-year-old daughter Shukhia Akhter, and Reba Tripura, believed to be 18 years, a college student of Kalaghata.

Around five people were also injured during the landslide and taken to hospitals, said the fire fighters.

Fire Service officials said that the incidents occurred early in the morning when a large chunk of mud collapsed on their house while they were asleep.

However, road communication between Bandarban and Chittagong was halted as the Bajaliar Road went underwater due to heavy rainfall.
